GOOD FOOD, DIFFERENT OCCASIONS

Restaurants in Thanet worth planning a visit around

The best table depends on your plans: a seafood lunch, an Italian dinner, small plates by the sea or a relaxed meal after a beach walk. Here is a researched shortlist across the area, with direct links to each restaurant. These are editorial suggestions based on the venues’ published information, rather than personal dining reviews or a numbered ranking.

MARGATE ยท ITALIAN

Bottega Caruso

A family-run Italian restaurant on Broad Street, with cooking rooted in Campania and fresh pasta at its heart. A good option when you want to build an Old Town visit around an unhurried lunch or dinner. The nearby La Cantina adds a shop and wine-bar stop.

MARGATE ยท SEAFOOD

Angela’s

A small seafood restaurant with a daily changing menu and seasonal vegetable dishes. Consider it for a meal where the day’s catch shapes the choice. Contact the venue about access, larger groups, dogs or space for a pushchair before booking; its older building includes narrow stairs to the toilets.

MARGATE HARBOUR ARM ยท SMALL PLATES

Sargasso

A Harbour Arm stop for a menu of smaller plates, seafood and seasonal vegetables. Choose it when the setting is part of the evening and your group enjoys sharing. Check the current menu and the venue’s published toilet-access information, especially if step-free facilities are essential.

BROADSTAIRS ยท HARBOUR DINING

The Tartar Frigate

A Harbour Street pub and restaurant overlooking Viking Bay, with seafood and a separate bar-food offering. It suits a Broadstairs day that moves from beach to dinner. Sunday dining has a different format, so check the menu and sitting when making your plans.

RAMSGATE ยท FISH AND SEAFOOD

Marc-Pierre’s Kitchen

Overlooking the Royal Harbour from West Cliff Arcade, this restaurant focuses on fish, shellfish and seasonal Kent ingredients. A natural choice for a harbour afternoon followed by dinner. Its opening pattern changes with the season; use the current timetable on the restaurant’s own website.

BIRCHINGTON ยท BAY VIEWS

The Minnis Bay Bar & Brasserie

A seafront option at Minnis Bay for breakfast, lunch or dinner, with seafood and British brasserie dishes. Pair it with time on the promenade or a beach walk. Check whether you are booking the restaurant, arranging a group meal or simply using the outdoor kiosk, as each has its own service arrangements.

BEACHES, CULTURE AND DAYS OUT

Things to do when visiting Thanet

Art and the Old Town in Margate

Start at Turner Contemporary on the seafront, then leave time for the Old Town’s independent shops and a meal nearby. The gallery’s exhibitions are free, while some workshops and events are ticketed. Check exhibition changeovers and seasonal opening days before making a special journey.

Dreamland and a seaside evening

Dreamland combines seasonal amusement-park days with a separate programme of music and events. Match your visit to the actual opening calendar: rides do not operate year-round, and a concert ticket is different from ride access. Check age, height and event-entry requirements before booking.

Discover the Shell Grotto

For a compact indoor visit, explore Margate’s Shell Grotto, an underground space lined with shell mosaics. Allow time for its visitor information and access guidance: it is a confined space with no step-free access. Consult the venue before taking a group.

A beach day in Broadstairs

Make Viking Bay the centre of a simple seaside day, with town-centre food stops nearby. For other bays, use the council’s beach information to compare facilities, access and seasonal rules. Check tides and weather before setting off along the shore.

Ramsgate harbour and wartime history

Build a Ramsgate visit around a harbour stroll and a booked visit to Ramsgate Tunnels. Tours run at set times, so reserve the tour first and fit the rest of the day around it. Review the operator’s access information if underground conditions may affect your group.

Birchington, Minnis Bay and Quex

Choose a quieter coast-and-countryside day with Minnis Bay and Quex Park. Quex contains several independently operated attractions, workshops and food stops. Check each business separately; one attraction being open does not mean the whole estate follows the same timetable. The Powell-Cotton Museum and Quex House publish their own seasonal dates.

For a rainy day, start with the gallery, Shell Grotto or a pre-booked Tunnels tour, allowing for each venue’s access and opening arrangements. For a lower-cost day, combine a seafront walk with a free gallery visit. Beach facilities, dog restrictions and lifeguard cover vary by bay and season.

A FLEXIBLE TWO-DAY PLAN

A weekend in Thanet

Day one: Margate at your own pace

Keep the morning for Turner Contemporary and the Old Town. Choose one booked activity or exhibition for the afternoon, then leave time for the seafront before dinner. If you are going to a Dreamland concert, use its entry time to plan the meal rather than trying to fit both into the same short window.

Day two: choose your coast

For a beach-led day, head to Broadstairs and Viking Bay, with a restaurant table booked for later. For history, choose Ramsgate Tunnels followed by the harbour. For a gentler outing, make Birchington, Quex or Minnis Bay the focus. Pick one main area rather than spending the day moving between every town.

Thanet visit questions

Where can I find current events in Thanet?

Use the dated listings above for a selection from Visit Thanet, then follow the organiser’s details before booking. The official calendar has a wider range of events and filters for your dates and interests.

Which Thanet town should I stay in?

Margate is a practical base for the gallery, Old Town and Dreamland. Broadstairs suits a Viking Bay beach visit; Ramsgate suits harbour time and the Tunnels. Birchington offers access to Minnis Bay and Quex. Your best fit also depends on the property, transport and the needs of your group.

Do I need a car for every day out?

You can plan a day around one town rather than driving between attractions. For travel between towns, check current rail and bus services, your accommodation’s location and the last return service before booking evening plans. Parking arrangements are specific to each ADLIV property.
